Asolo Rep And The FSU

Sarasota, FL -- Evita,

Shakespeare In Love and

The Morning After Grace, among other plays presented by the Asolo Repertory Theatre, are coming to the Mertz Theatre at the FSU Center for the Performing Arts.

On Monday, Asolo Rep and the FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training released their 2017-2018 season schedule. Striving to earn the same critical and public acclaim from the 2016-2017 season, the new season, Staging Our World, will continue to explore and amplify American voices while sharing stories through a global lens.

As written on Asolo’s press release, “When the world needs a sense of cohesion and shared values, Asolo Rep is deeply committed to telling the stories that make people feel that they need to come to the theatre – the stories that we must hear again and again, and experience in new ways.”

The season officially launches on Nov. 15, with Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s

Evita before kicking off its repertory season on Jan. 10 with

Shakespeare In Love. The original production of each play won a Tony Award for Best Musical and an Academy Award for Best Picture, respectively.

Plays will overlap. After

Evita concludes its showings on Dec. 30,

Shakespeare In Love runs from Jan. 10 to March 28, rotating with

The Morning After Grace and

Rhinoceros, which run until March 4 and April 14.

Grace,” which takes place in a Florida retirement community and follows the love story of residents Angus and Abigail, has been described as an unconventional comedy. Eugene Lonesco's

Rhinoceros, for its part, is set in post-World War II France and centers on an outsider in an otherwise conforming community.

The season continues in Mach with

Roe, a production about the landmark 1973 case that legalized abortion, then returns to the musical theme with the opening of

Ragtime in May.

Additional 2017-2018 productions include

Gloria (April 6-29),

Oedipus (Nov. 1-19),

The Motherf***er With The Hat (Jan. 3-21),

The Rehearsal (Feb. 21-Mar. 11) and

Much Ado About Nothing (April 18-May 6). There will also be a summer family production from June 8-30, to close Asolo Rep’s 2017-18 season to be announced “very soon.”
