Hillary Clinton Speaks At Oscar De La Renta's Stamp Dedication Ceremony

Hillary Clinton‘s calendar of events in New York City continues.

A day after earning applause while attending >Sunset Boulevard on Broadway, Clinton stepped out in the city on Thursday night for the dedication ceremony of Oscar de la Renta’s new stamp.

The former presidential candidate spoke at the ceremony, as did former N.Y.C. mayor Michael Bloomberg, and referenced de la Renta’s status as an immigrant. The statement was a subtle nod to the Trump administration’s immigration policies, including the controversial travel ban that was halted by a federal judge, and later, an appeals court.

The stamp features a black and white photo of the late fashion designer, who died just over two years ago, with the words ‘USA Forever’ at the top. It was debuted on the final day of New York Fashion Week.

“Oscar de la Renta was an immigrant, as Mike Bloomberg has said, and aren’t we proud and grateful that he was?” said Clinton, who wore a bright pink jacket for the occasion. “What a fitting person to be chosen by our Postal Service, mentioned, by the way in the Constitution, something we should all read and re-read in today’s times.”

“And its choice of this immigrant who did so much for our country, his country, truly is what it means when we say, ‘USA Forever.’ Who we are, what we stand for. And let there be many, many more immigrants with the love of America that Oscar de la Renta exemplified every single day.”

Born in the Dominican Republic in 1932, de la Renta moved to New York City at age 30. He died at age 82 in October 2014.

Along with Clinton, influential figures like Diane von Furstenberg and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, as well as Clinton’s aide Huma Abedin, attended the event. Clinton and Wintour sat next to each other on stage, and at one point, shared a hug.

Throughout her campaign, Clinton had the support of the bulk of the fashion industry, including heavyweights like Wintour (who wore Clinton campiagn t-shirts on talk show visits), von Furstenberg and Marc Jacobs, among others.
